SolidCraft vs FreeCAD

SolidCraft and FreeCAD are both free, open-source, parametric 3D CAD programs for Windows, macOS and Linux. The big difference is age: FreeCAD has decades of features and a large community, while SolidCraft shipped its first release (as SolveCraft) on 9 October 2026 and is moving fast.

FAQ

Can SolidCraft open FreeCAD files?

Yes, the desktop app can import FreeCAD .FCStd files (and Rhino .3dm). It cannot save back to .FCStd, so use STEP to move parts between the two.

Is SolidCraft going to replace FreeCAD?

Not today. SolidCraft's first release came out in October 2026 and its own README calls it early. FreeCAD has been developed for more than twenty years and covers far more, including 2D drawings and FEM.

Which one is easier for a beginner?

That depends on what you are used to. SolidCraft's interface follows the Fusion-style layout of one toolbar and a timeline, which many makers already know. FreeCAD splits tools into workbenches, which takes longer to learn but goes much deeper.
