SolidCraft is an open-source (MIT or Apache-2.0) parametric 3D CAD application written in pure Rust. You sketch a 2D profile, add dimensions and constraints, then turn it into a solid with features like extrude, revolve and fillet. Every step lands on an editable timeline, so changing one number later rebuilds the whole model. It runs as a desktop app on Windows, macOS and Linux, as a web app in your browser, and as a command-line tool that AI agents can drive through MCP.
The tool at the top of this page loads the official web build so you can try it in a few seconds, then hands you the right installer for your computer.
Install SolidCraft on Windows, macOS and Linux
Install SolidCraft on Windows, macOS, Linux or FreeBSD. Or skip the installer and use the browser build.
- Windows. An MSI and a portable ZIP for x64, ARM64 and x86, plus an EXE installer for x64. Or run
winget install bherbruck.SolidCraft. - macOS. One universal DMG. It runs on Apple silicon and on Intel.
- Linux. AppImage, DEB, RPM, Flatpak, Snap and TAR, for x64 and ARM64. Or run
sudo snap install solidcraft. - FreeBSD. A TAR archive.
The installers are unsigned. On Windows, choose More info, then Run anyway. On macOS, right-click the app and choose Open the first time. The project has not signed the installers, which is why those two prompts appear.
Pick a file when you want a specific CPU build: x64, ARM64 or x86 on Windows, x64 or ARM64 on Linux. Pick winget install bherbruck.SolidCraft or sudo snap install solidcraft when that tool is already on the machine. macOS is the one universal DMG for Apple silicon and Intel. FreeBSD is the TAR archive. The browser build needs no package.
The buttons under "Next: get the desktop app" download a build for the system this browser reports. The SolidCraft download page lists every package above, including FreeBSD and both one-line commands.
License: open source under MIT or Apache-2.0
SolidCraft is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, at your option. The README says "MIT OR Apache-2.0, at your option". You choose which of the two licenses to follow. The repository includes both texts, as LICENSE-MIT and as LICENSE-APACHE. Cargo.toml records the same choice, license = "MIT OR Apache-2.0".
The source is the official GitHub repository, tangency-labs/solidcraft. The older path, bherbruck/solidcraft, redirects to that same repository. Open LICENSE-MIT or LICENSE-APACHE in the repository root for the terms. The README line and the Cargo.toml field name that same pair, so the README and the build file say the same thing. The SolidCraft GitHub guide shows where the repository is and what is in it. This page does not add license terms of its own.
What you can do with SolidCraft
SolidCraft covers the everyday parts of mechanical CAD. Its feature list counts more than 370 commands. The ones most people reach for first:
- Sketches: lines, arcs, rectangles, circles, slots, splines and text, with constraints such as coincident, tangent, parallel, equal and symmetric.
- Solids: extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, hole, thread, rib, shell, fillet, chamfer and patterns.
- Assemblies: components with joints (rigid, gear, rack and pinion, screw), motion studies, exploded views and interference checks.
- Sheet metal: flanges, hems, fold and unfold, and flat patterns you can export as DXF.
- Parameters: named values with unit-aware expressions, plus configurations for part variants.
File formats
| Format | Open | Save / export |
|---|---|---|
| STEP (AP203/214/242) | Yes | Yes (AP242) |
| IGES | Yes | Yes |
| STL, 3MF, OBJ | Yes (as mesh) | Yes |
| glTF | Yes (as mesh) | No |
| DXF / SVG | Into a sketch | DXF |
| FreeCAD .FCStd, Rhino .3dm | Desktop app only | No |
That makes SolidCraft a practical choice for 3D printing: model the part, export STL or 3MF, and send it to your slicer.
Desktop, browser or command line?
- Desktop app is the full experience: fastest, saves to real folders, and it has a built-in agent chat (Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+A) that can talk to tools like Claude Code, Codex or a local model.
- Browser app needs no install, which helps on a locked-down work laptop. Saves go to the browser's private storage, and FreeCAD/Rhino import and agent chat are desktop-only.
solidcraft-cliruns headless: build a part from a JSON script, export STEP, render a PNG, measure volume and area, or start an MCP server.
Our SolidCraft download guide lists every installer and how to get past the "unknown publisher" warnings.
Try an official example from the command line
Run an official example and write a STEP file with one command:
solidcraft-cli run examples/bracket.json --out bracket.step
Read it from the left. solidcraft-cli is the command-line tool. run plays a script. examples/bracket.json is the official JSON script in the source repository. --out bracket.step is the STEP file the run writes. STEP is a format SolidCraft opens and saves.
Scripts use the same commands as the app. A command the toolbar runs is a command a script can call. The JSON file is that sequence, written down. Edit the script and run the command again. The commands in the file are what the run exports to STEP. The example is in the source repository, so you can run a script the project ships there before you write one of your own.
solidcraft-cli does this with no window. The SolidCraft CLI page covers the other subcommands and more examples from the project.
SolidCraft and AI agents (MCP)
AI is optional. SolidCraft works without a connected assistant.
SolidCraft ships an MCP server, so an AI assistant can create, measure and export models for you. In Claude Code it takes one line: claude mcp add solidcraft -- solidcraft-cli mcp. The SolidCraft MCP setup page has the Claude Desktop config, the full tool list and the file-access rules.
You can keep modelling with no assistant connected. When you want one, there are two ways.
- Agent chat. A side panel in the desktop app. Open it with Ctrl+Shift+A, or Cmd+Shift+A on a Mac. It can use Claude Code, Codex, Google Antigravity, OpenCode, Grok Build and others. It can also use an OpenAI-compatible or Anthropic-compatible endpoint, including a local model in Ollama or LM Studio.
- MCP. An assistant outside the app uses
solidcraft-cli mcp. That server runs headless, with no SolidCraft window, or attached to the desktop app that is already running, so you can watch the work in the app.
Use agent chat when you want the assistant inside the desktop app. Use solidcraft-cli mcp when the assistant runs outside it.
How it compares
SolidCraft is young. The first release came out on 9 October 2026 under the name SolveCraft, and the project has been shipping several releases a day since. It uses the truck B-rep kernel written in Rust, not OpenCASCADE like FreeCAD. If you are choosing between them, read SolidCraft vs FreeCAD. What parametric CAD means is on SolidCraft parametric CAD. If you just want to make something, the SolidCraft tutorial walks through a first part step by step.

Is it the right tool for you?
The project describes itself as "early but usable for simple parts". 75 of 76 public reference parts match. Both are the project's own report, in its README, of where the modeller stands.
The roadmap, with status as of 2026-10-14, defers drawings, CAM, simulation, rendering, meshes, T-splines, surfaces beyond what solids need, PCB and animation. Those items are deferred work, named for later. A simple part is what the project says it is usable for. The browser build is a direct way to try a simple part before you install the desktop app.
SolidCraft suits makers, hobbyists and engineers who want an open-source (MIT or Apache-2.0) parametric modeller that feels closer to Fusion-style tools than to older open-source CAD. The project itself says it is early: 2D drawings are not built yet, STEP assemblies are flattened on import, and threads are faceted. For brackets, enclosures, jigs and printable parts, it already does the job, and the browser version makes it quick to find out.
